Direct answer

Dog boarding insurance is business insurance for someone caring for clients’ dogs overnight. Start with the care, custody or control exclusion and the animal-bailee coverage that may address it. General liability, veterinary reimbursement and professional liability answer different questions; a pet-health policy for your own dog is not a substitute.

The sections below show how to verify the answer and what can change it.

Write the activity description the insurer must cover

List where dogs sleep, the largest number present at once, maximum stay length, group play, walking, transport, medication administration and any grooming or training. Identify employees and subcontractors separately. If boarding takes place at your home, state that explicitly. A proposal describing occasional sitting at clients’ homes is not an accurate description of a home boarding operation.

The SBA separates general liability, professional liability and business property coverage. Use those categories to ask precise questions, not to assume all three arrive in a single package. Your policy may combine them or omit one. A certificate listing a liability limit does not resolve whether a particular dog-related activity is covered.

A named product shows why capacity matters

Pet Care Insurance’s current boarding page describes general liability, animal-bailee protection and veterinary reimbursement. Its basic boarding presentation is for five or fewer animals per night, with kennel-insurance referral for six or more and stays beyond 30 days. This is a screening example from a public summary, not a finding that your operation qualifies or a substitute for its forms.

If you normally board four dogs but accept a sixth over a holiday, the peak operation belongs in the application. Ask how the count treats your own dogs and overlapping pickup days. Save the answer and any endorsement. Do not rely on a base price or certificate issued for a narrower activity when the actual service has expanded.

Checklist

Questions for the proposed policy

Must you be legally liable before animal-bailee benefits respond?
Is veterinary reimbursement a separate benefit, and what triggers it?
Are limits per animal, incident or policy year, and are defense costs inside them?
Are illness, communicable disease, escape and death treated differently?
Does medication administration require an endorsement or professional-liability coverage?
Which people, locations and subcontractors are insured?

Consider a dog injured during supervised play. The cost of an immediate veterinary visit, a later owner demand and an allegation that instructions were ignored may involve different provisions. Ask for a clause-by-clause explanation using that scenario. Do not assume that paying the first vet bill settles the liability issue, or that a liability limit automatically pays without a qualifying claim.

Before accepting the next booking

Retain the application, binder, policy, endorsements and current certificate. Check business name, location, service description and dates. Local permits, landlord terms and platform protections need separate verification; this guide does not invent a nationwide boarding-license rule or certify any operator’s compliance.

FAQ

Common questions

Does a pet owner’s health policy protect my boarding business?

Do not assume so. Your business liability and custody exposures need their own analysis.

Is a certificate enough for a client?

It can show evidence of a policy, but it does not replace the contract and endorsements that define protection.
